Is Lido Finance safe?
The short answer: Lido Finance is the most scrutinised liquid staking protocol on Ethereum, and it has never lost user principal — but "safe" is a range of probabilities across four separate risks, not a single yes. This page walks each one, says what actually protects you, and where the protection stops.

1. Smart contract risk
Every deposit into Lido Finance passes through immutable-but-upgradeable contracts that mint stETH, route ETH to validators and account for rewards. These contracts have been audited repeatedly by multiple independent firms and have run at multi- billion scale for years without a loss of principal — the strongest empirical evidence available in DeFi. It is still not proof. Audits sample code; they do not prove correctness, and upgradeability means the code you reviewed is not necessarily the code running next quarter. The practical mitigations are the ones you control: size the position so a total protocol failure is survivable, and read the upgrade timelock before assuming you would have time to exit.
2. Node operator and slashing risk
Your ETH is validated by a curated operator set, not by you. If an operator double- signs or goes offline for a long stretch, the network penalises the validator. Lido Finance socialises those penalties across the pool and maintains a cover fund, so a realistic incident costs the pool a few basis points of yield rather than a visible hit to anyone's balance. The genuinely dangerous scenario is correlated failure — many operators sharing one client, one cloud region or one relay going wrong simultaneously. Client and infrastructure diversity across the operator set is therefore a safety metric worth checking, not a technicality.
3. Governance risk
Token-holder governance controls the fee split, the operator whitelist and contract upgrades. That is real power over your position, exercised by people you did not choose. Timelocks and distributed voting weight make a hostile change slow and visible; concentrated voting power makes it fast and quiet. Before depositing, look at who can move the parameters and how long you would have to react. This is the risk that most safety write-ups skip because it cannot be audited away.
4. stETH market price risk
The protocol redeems stETH for ETH one-for-one through the withdrawal queue. The open market does not have to agree. When many holders want out faster than the queue allows, they compete for finite liquidity and stETH trades at a discount — the so-called depeg. Historically these gaps closed once withdrawals were enabled and panic passed. The people hurt were leveraged holders forced to sell into the gap, not patient holders who waited for redemption.
