Liquid Staking vs Solo Staking vs Exchange Staking

Staking is not a single product. Running your own validator, depositing into a liquid staking protocol and clicking 'stake' on a centralised exchange produce roughly comparable reward rates but wildly different exposure to custody, operational and governance risk.

Solo staking: maximum control, maximum responsibility

Running your own validator means you hold the keys, choose the client software, and keep the machine online. Nobody takes a commission, so gross and net yield are almost the same, and you contribute directly to the network's decentralisation by adding an independent node with an independently chosen client.

The costs are real. You need the full minimum deposit, a reliable internet connection, an uninterruptible setup, and the discipline to apply client updates promptly. Downtime costs small penalties; a misconfiguration that causes double-signing costs far more. The capital is illiquid until you exit, and the exit queue is outside your control.

Liquid staking: pooled deposits, transferable receipt

A liquid staking protocol accepts any deposit size, spreads it across a curated set of node operators, and issues a token representing your share. Operational work disappears, the minimum effectively vanishes, and the receipt token remains usable elsewhere while the underlying stake keeps earning.

In exchange you accept smart contract risk, governance risk and operator-set risk. The contracts must be correct; the parties who choose operators and set fees must behave; the operators must stay honest and online. Reputable protocols mitigate this with audits, bug bounties, withdrawal guarantees, operator diversification and slashing coverage, but the risk does not go to zero.

There is also a network-level concern. If a single liquid staking protocol controls a very large share of total stake, that concentration can weaken the assumptions the chain relies on. Many users deliberately split deposits across issuers for this reason.

Exchange staking: convenience with custody attached

Centralised exchanges offer the simplest experience: no wallet, no contract interaction, often one button. The exchange runs validators with pooled customer assets and passes on part of the rewards after a commission that is frequently higher than a liquid staking protocol's.

The defining difference is custody. Your claim is a database entry with a company, not a token you hold, so you inherit that company's counterparty, regulatory and solvency risk. Withdrawals can be paused. In several jurisdictions the availability of retail staking products has changed abruptly. For long-term holders, this is usually the least resilient of the three routes even though it feels the safest.

Choosing between them

If you hold at least the network minimum, care about decentralisation, and are comfortable operating infrastructure, solo staking is the purest option. If you want flexibility, a small ticket size or composability with DeFi, liquid staking fits. If you value simplicity above self-custody and are staking a modest amount, an exchange may be acceptable — provided you understand you are lending the asset to a company.

These are not exclusive. A common pattern is to solo stake a core position, liquid stake a working portion for flexibility, and keep the rest unstaked for immediate needs.
